While I was thinking this morning about automated programs, OutWar came to mind. I thought, here's a bunch of people that probably leave their computers on 24/7, idly doing nothing. So, why not make use of all of that wasted energy?
I have this run at home and on my work computers, and they've been installed for several years now. It's 100% safe. It's a project to help crunch computer data to find real life solutions to world-wide problems.
"World Community Grid is making technology available only to public and not-for-profit organizations to use in humanitarian research that might otherwise not be completed due to the high cost of the computer infrastructure required in the absence of a public grid. As part of our commitment to advancing human welfare, all results will be in the public domain and made public to the global research community.
When idle, your computer will request data on a specific project from World Community Grid's server. It will then perform computations on this data, send the results back to the server, and ask the server for a new piece of work. Each computation that your computer performs provides scientists with critical information that accelerates the pace of research!
Grid computing joins together many individual computers, creating a large system with massive computational power that far surpasses the power of a handful of supercomputers. Because the work is split into small pieces that can be processed simultaneously, research time is reduced from years to months. The technology is also more cost-effective, enabling better use of critical funds."
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in creating an OutWar / Rampid Gaming team for the grid? My information is here (https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewMemberInfo.do?userName=Tommy%20Callahan) if anyone is interested. The home page is here. (www.worldcommunitygrid.org)
