Hookers (Do they work?)

When purchasing a Hooker it says +2 Income and a monetary value next to it. Do they have to work in a strip club/brothel for that money to be made? or is this just not working for now?

I'm pretty sure that the hookers actually do give money by themselves, even when not working. Can someone clarify this?

Hookers have to be gainfully employed in a Brothel type business to generate income for you.
