In for sure. He earns the honor for his play. Gambling shouldn't take that away from him.

jay horrible topic, OUT because he bet on baseball and on his own team's outcome to make a profit. And tax evasion! What a hoe

wiki quotes
- "In August 1989, three years after he retired as an active player, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds, including claims that he bet on his own team. In 2004, after years of public denial, he admitted to betting on baseball and on, but not against, the Reds.[2] After Rose's ban was instated, the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those on the "permanently ineligible" list from induction. Previously, those who were banned had been excluded by informal agreement among voters. The issue of Rose's possible re-instatement and election to the Hall of Fame remains a contentious one throughout baseball."

- "The Dowd Report documented his alleged bets on 52 Reds games in 1987, where Rose wagered a minimum of $10,000 a day. Others involved in the allegations claim that number was actually $2,000 a day."

- "On April 20, 1990, Rose pleaded guilty to two charges of filing false income tax returns not showing income he received from selling autographs, memorabilia, and from horse racing winnings. On July 19, Rose was sentenced to five months in the medium security Prison Camp at the United States Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois and fined $50,000.[11] He was released on January 7, 1991 after having paid $366,041 in back taxes and interest, and was required to perform 1000 hours of community service."

It should make no difference what someone has done in their personal life when it comes to getting in to the hall of fame.

If he had bet against his team, and they could prove that, then I could see that holding him out, since he could have been holding back, or throwing games as it were.

But as long as his actions off the field didn't directly change the outcome of games, then the only thing that should matter should be how he played.

Kinda wrong there... Hall of Fame is for role models in or out the baseball field. You dont want the next generation of baseball players thinking "yea its ok to gamble, evade tax as long as Im good at hittin/pitchin I can get in HoF" thats not the main idea. The main idea of HoF is to have players to look up to, true role-models that next generations can follow their examples.

I would say that should depend on what they do.

If someone committed murder, or rape or any sort of hard crime, then yes it should be considered.

For something along the lines of poor accounting (tax evasion), or vices (gambling), I don't think it should matter unless it affected the gameplay (betting against yourself and throwing the game).

Look at all the past greats who were womanizers, and drunks, those are vices, should they be removed from the hall of fame?

Do we really expect professional athletes to be good at math now too?

Poor accounting is forgetting to add a few zeros. FRAUDULENT accounting is evading taxes. It's not a crime to womanize (to an extent) or drink it is a crime to completely defraud your government.

I really don't think of tax evasion as a crime, seems more like a policy violation to me, especially when you consider that an income tax is unconstitutional to begin with.

Well, I dont consider tax evading that bad to not be in HoF, but about the gambling part, thats really the ****ed up part. How can you be sure that he only gamble for the Reds and not against them?! He spent years saying that he doesnt gamble, then he says he does but for its own team... how do you know he never lost a game cuz he gambled for it?!

You can't know that really, which is why it shouldn't be considered.

If there was any sort of proof that he had done so, then it should keep him out, but since there isn't....
