Tomed?

OK here is a super noob question.

What does tomed mean?
I keep seeing it as a requirement for some crews and the word pops up in other places, but I haven't been able to figure out exactly what it means.

Is it some kind of item?
Is it questable?
Is it a player upgrade?

It's an item you get from gods like Lord Varan and above in the "potion god" category. It costs roughly 200-250 points (on Torax) and doubles your block for 2 hours.

Edit: To clarify - You use it and it becomes a permanent skill for you.
